The book of Revelation discusses the rise of a global government, referring to leaders or ‘kings’ set over parts of that body (to be led by the ‘Antichrist’, according to scripture):
Revelation 17: 12,13
“12And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.”
But should this be taken literally, or is it simply an analogy or word picture to teach us something else? If it is something to be taken literally, as tradition suggests, are we seeing the erosion of national sovereignty, and the rise of global authority? Here again, maybe we should compare scripture to the news around us?
Today, a news article caught my attention from the International Herald Tribune:
“Europe’s east-west border is at last wide open” http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/12/21/europe/union.php
So, are we seeing signs of an eventual global government? There are 2 major points which may aid us in observing this querry. They include: 1) What is a ‘government’? How is it defined? This leads to 2) Does this discussion really matter?
1) Well, we shall only go into a quick ‘overview’ mode today, but I submit for your consideration as to “What is ‘government’ ” 2 possible examples. What are your thoughts concerning these topics?
The European Union
Do you know the history of the EU, or European Union? If not, it may perhaps benefit you to look up its history: What is it? How was it formed? Why was it formed? What events led to its formation? If you would like to look some information for yourself, I would encourage you to look up the information for yourself. A possible starting place to do research would be here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union
The European Union is currently made up of 27 of what they refer to as ‘member states’, or nations. In general, they have formed an alliance with each other for economic, social, security, and other benefit. In fact, the alliance which these nations have formed could possbily be compared to what the original 13 US colonies accomplished when they joined together (still as individual ’states’, but on the whole as a country, or as they called it: ‘union’). The EU has formed (and is currently still forming) its government structure, common laws (health, economic/trade, personal rights, etc) and each nation in the EU either accepts (or has totally replaced its currency) with the Euro, or common European currency. At what point do these nations become part of another ‘nation’? Or can all these things be called a simple ‘cooperative effort’? The question that may be asked is, “At what point do they cease to become nations, and become instead a state in what is a larger ‘country’?” May these thoughts also be applied to the United States? Why or why not? What is similar, and what is different between the EU and US?
Partnership? Or EU-Style ‘alliance’: Possible North American Union?
After observing what the EU is, and how it was formed: Do we see any similarities today in North America? Could we one day experience a type of “North American Union”? I have some links which may or may not interest you in doing more research into whether this is either a) happening on our continent, or b) an urban legend. :

Here is some video featuring current and former politicians concerning a possible North American Union:

What do you think? Is there enough info for us to take a second look at a possible North American Union? Or is it simply myth without basis? And perhaps just as important, again, is: What separates an ‘alliance’ from a ‘government’? Is it a system of coherent laws, monetary system, etc?
Related to both talk of the EU and the perhaps possibility of a similar North American counterpart, I would also personally like to add something I learned in some of the earliest classes I took in college in 1998 and 99. During those years I took both macro and micro economics, among other business and economic-related classes. At the time our teacher talked to us, gave us reading assignments concerning the coming global rise in ‘economic corridors/trade unions’. We were told back then that financial experts had a general consensus that the world would evolve into 3 major trade unions, or essentially governments with their own leadership and systems of laws which would supersede those of each ‘country’ (as we know them today). We were told that either we could embrace this coming global system, or we would seriously hurt our long-term business planning. So, do I have an opinion about these things? Yes…I believe personally that overall a) many people want to make money finding new business opportunities and b) regardless of motive, the Bible is yet again correct in prophecy.
2) Finally, after asking questions about the identity and history of the EU….and considering the possibility or a potential rise of a similar coalition in North America, how does this affect us? According to scripture as addressed in the intro to this essay, does not scripture talk about a rising global superstate? If we do see nations merging together to form regional or continental government….and if financial experts are even teaching college students that these governments are not a question of ‘if’, but ‘when’…. Are these not yet another sign we are to watch for in scripture to track the ‘End of the Age’, or second coming of Jesus?
