Can We Tell the Wolves from the Sheep?

“Let us pray in this hour that nothing can divide us, and that God will help us against the Devil! Almighty Lord, bless our fight!”

“The National Government will regard it as its first and foremost duty to revive in the nation the spirit of unity and cooperation. It will preserve and defend those basic principles on which our nation has been built. It regards Christianity as the foundation of our national morality, and the family as the basis of national life.”

“In the Bible we find the text, ‘That which is neither hot nor cold will I spew out of my mouth.’ This utterance of the great Nazarene has kept its profound validity until the present day.”

“Today Christians … stand at the head of [this country] … I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity … We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit … We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press—in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past … [few] years.”

“Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith.”

“May God Almighty give our work His blessing, strengthen our purpose, and endow us with wisdom and the trust of our people, for we are fighting not for ourselves but for Germany.”

What do you think of these quotes? Do they sound familiar? They came from a man who rose to the pinnacle of politics. Out of a society and culture filled with turmoil and a people looking for leadership, this man gave passionate speeches and frequently quoted the Bible. Furthermore, he was extremely popular with Christians (especially Evangelicals) and was trusted by many to bring his country back from the brinks of social and moral bankruptcy.

You may recognize this man. He is world-famous. The mention of him or his life’s work are constantly the focus of books, movie, media, and daily discussion. However, now that he does not have his admittedly federal-driven news and propaganda agencies in front of him after years of exposure, many of us now understand that the man we know as Adolf Hitler was not a Christian, and many equate even a picture of his face or silhouette with pure evil. Today we don’t merely look at some of his words…but most all of his public comments, statements, and speeches…as well as look at his actions!

But how can this be? He had so many seemingly good, Christian supporters? Wasn’t he first elected in a free society into Congress, and later legally into a position of leadership? Furthermore, why couldn’t the German people see him for what he was? And what he was doing? Why?

Were people really paying any attention in Germany before Hitler was elected? Before the Nazis took over, Germany was known as the Weimar Republic. The people lived in a free society, and voted in their leaders…and Hitler was a freely elected politician! Towards the end he started making his own decrees and granting himself power not allowed by their constitution, but…He did follow, then bend….and finally break their laws. But did did many Germans really notice? Did many do anything about it?

When we read things like the book of Revelation, do we really believe what’s there? Or do we reject it because we think it impossible for any man to deceive the world into receiving him as dictator and god?

Matthew 7:15-29 (KJV)

15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

29For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

As with anything else…What does scripture tell us?
